NOVISHPAK Inspires Young Minds Through Tiny Teen Science Café Outreach Activity

A hands-on science outreach activity titled Tiny Teen Science Café was held in March 2026 at San Lawrenz Primary School, engaging young students in interactive scientific exploration. The event formed part of ongoing outreach efforts by researchers from the University of Malta involved in the NOVISHPAK project.

During the session, students were introduced to the concept of sustainable materials and smart food packaging through an engaging presentation delivered by the researchers. The talk highlighted how natural resources such as seaweed and fish waste can be transformed into innovative materials for food preservation, while also offering insight into careers in science and research .

A key highlight of the activity was a practical experiment where students actively participated in the process of alginate gelation. Using safe laboratory techniques, they observed how sodium alginate reacts with metal ions such as calcium, copper, and iron to form gel-like structures. This hands-on experience allowed students to visualise how materials can change properties through chemical interactions, directly linking to real-world applications in smart packaging.

The activity successfully sparked curiosity and enthusiasm among participants, demonstrating the importance of early engagement in science education while promoting awareness of sustainable innovations developed within the NOVISHPAK project.
