A researcher from the University of Malta participated in the International Conference on Materials Science, 2nd Edition (IC-MAS 2025), held in Verona between 3rd and 5th December 2025. The conference brought together international experts to discuss the latest developments in materials science, offering a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange.
During the event, Roderick Abdilla delivered an oral presentation highlighting recent advances achieved within the NOVISHPAK project. The talk focused on the development of sustainable smart packaging materials derived from natural sources, including fish gelatin and marine-based polymers. Particular emphasis was placed on improving the functional performance of these materials while maintaining environmental sustainability.
A key aspect of the presentation was the introduction of a novel multilayered film concept. This approach aims to enhance the mechanical strength, barrier properties, and sensing capabilities of the packaging system by integrating multiple functional layers. The design supports the incorporation of embedded chemical sensors for detecting spoilage indicators, thereby contributing to improved food safety and shelf-life monitoring.
Participation in IC-MAS 2025 strengthened the visibility of the NOVISHPAK project and fostered valuable discussions with international researchers working on innovative and sustainable materials solutions.
